If you’re a footy fan you’ve probably heard of this legendary midfielder, former member of Croatian national team. Robert Prosinecki was born in 1969. in Germany’s Schwenningen, where his parents were working. He came in Croatia at early age and started playing for Dinamo Zagreb, but coach Miroslav Blazevic dismissed him saying his (in)famous sentence: ‘If this lad becomes a real football player, I’ll eat my coaching diploma.’

I’m not sure if his diploma still remained in one piece, but Robert Prosinecki then signed for Red Star Belgrade and made his debut in young national team of Yugoslavia. In fact, in 1987. Robi or Zuti (‘the yellow one’, due to his blonde hair) came to the world’s attention at the World Youth Championship in Chile where he was named player of the tournament!

Who would thought this midfielder would become the only player in World Cup history to score for two different national teams? In Italy 1990, Prosinecki scored one goal for Yugoslavia in a group match against United Arab Emirates. As Yugoslavia fell apart soon after that, Robi became prominent member of Croatian national team. Eight years later, during FIFA World Cup finals in France he scored 2 goals, in a group match against Jamaica and in the third place match against the Netherlands. The second goal included his famous technique, that fooled opponent players completely.

Croatia won third place that year (with striker Davor Suker as Golden Boot winner), but among many Croats there’s a still regret for what might have happened if only coach Blazevic didn’t leave Robert Prosinecki on a bench during semi-final match against France, which Croatia lost 1:2.

However, the 3rd place in a World Cup will forever remain the crown of his career, but let’s not forget he also won European Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991., and played for Spain’s big two clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona. In Portsmouth, where he played only in season 2001/2002., Robert is even now held as a hero and his nickname was ‘Croatian Magician’.

I met this football genius about 10 years ago, you never guess where – at the art gallery! No, he didn’t become a painter, but he opened exhibition of painting as a special guest. Calm and down-to-earth, he gave autographs afterwards and took pictures with his fans.

His appearance for Portugal at these championships sparked the interest of Liverpool’s then manager Gérard Houllier at the age of 16 but Houllier refused to sign him because he was deemed too young.

However, in 2003 the winger caught the eye of Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson when Sporting beat Manchester United 3-1 in a match that marked the inauguration of the Alvalade XXI stadium in Lisbon. With the departure of David Beckham, Manchester needed a right winger and he was signed for a fee of £12.24 million, becoming the Manchester United’s first Portuguese player ever. The Portuguese winger made his first appearance for the Red Devils at Old Trafford in a 4-0 win. He scored his first goal for Manchester United in the 2004 FA Cup Final against Millwall FC, the winger also scored Manchester United’s 1000th goal in a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in October 2005. At the end of the season, he had a tally of 10 goals and was voted by fans to be FIFPro Special Young Player of the Year 2005, an award he also won in 2006.

In the summer of 2006, the Portugal winger was at the center of a controversy with fellow Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney; when both teams met in the world cup quarter finals. The incident saw Rooney being shown a red card and the resulting elimination of England from the world cup on penalties; the last of which was taken by the winger. Despite the incident both players remained friends and in November 2006, he won the Barclays Player of the Month award again an award he also won in December 2006. He scored his 50th goal for Manchester United which proved to be the decisive goal that gave Manchester United their first Premiership title in four years against rivals Manchester City.

In April 2007, the Portuguese national signed a new five year deal worth £120,000 a week, making him the highest paid player in Manchester United’s history. Among his accolades, the Portuguese footballer won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the PFA Young Player of the Year awards, the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year, the Football Writers’ Association Award and 2007 Portuguese Footballer of the Year at the end of his 2006-2007 season at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2007-2008 season for the Barclays Premier League Champions saw him exceeding George Best’s forty year old record for the most goals scored by a midfielder in a season, at 32 goals by scoring 42 goals in all competitions helping Manchester United to back to back Premiership titles and the coveted UEFA Champions League title. Ronaldo who also placed third in the FIFA World Player of the Year awards in 2007 will be looking to place first in the same awards this year as he has proven to be the best player on the planet, with this season’s stellar performances. Cristiano Ronaldo however had a very disappointing Euro 2008 campaign with Portugal, which saw him scoring only one goal for his country that was eliminated by Germany in the quarter finals. Scoring several crucial goals for Manchester United during the 1996/97 campaign, Solskjaer finished as the club’s top scorer with 18 League goals in his very first season at The Theatre of Dreams.

Although the Norwegian striker had his soccer career cut short by injuries in 2007, he stayed with the Old Trafford club and eventually took over the reigns of the Manchester United Reserves the following year. As for the international stage, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made his first appearance for Norway in a friendly against Jamaica in Kingston on 26 November 1995, and went on to collect a total of 67 senior caps for his native country. In honour of the loyal Manchester United stalwart, a fully deserved testimonial game was staged against Espanyol in front of an incredible 68,000 crowd at Old Trafford in August 2008.

After finding the back of the net on his Manchester United debut at home to Blackburn Rovers in August 1996, the Norway international proceeded to make a total of 366 outings for the Manchester Reds, scoring 126 goals. Indisputably, the highlight of Solskjaer’s footballing life came in the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final when he netted the winning goal against Bayern Munich in the last minute of the match, winning the coveted Treble for Manchester United.

In retrospect, the prodigious Norseman was no doubt one of the most significant footballing servants ever to pull on the famous red shirt in Manchester United history. They have finished in second place 19 times. Barcelona has won 20 league titles. The two teams have combined to win the Champions League crown 12 times. During the Spanish Civil War, the league was briefly disbanded.

Different teams have had strong eras. In the early years of the league, Atletico Bilbao was the dominant team. They won four championships in the 1930’s. Valencia and Barcelona were the dominant teams of the 1940’s, each winning three titles during that decade. Real Madrid and Barcelona were the dominant teams of the 1950’s. Real Madrid won four championships during the 1950’s. In the 1960’s, Real Madrid became the most dominant team in La Liga. They won a remarkable eight championships in the 1960’s. They remained strong in the 1970’s, winning five championships. During the 1990’s, Barcelona began establishing themselves as a major force. They picked up six championships. The two major clubs have mostly dominated the 2000’s, although Valencia did win two titles in 2002 and 2004. Barcelona is the two time defending champion.

La Liga has seen some amazing players over the years. Being one of the top leagues in Europe, many superstars flock to Spain to play for one of the dominant teams. Raul Gonzalez, Hugo Sanchez, and David Beckham are among the major stars that have played with Real Madrid. Barcelona has also featured many of the best players in the world. Lionel Messy, Ronaldinho, and David Villa are among the formidable stars that have played for Barcelona. Other teams have featured some talented players as well.

While the idea may sound very modern, the fountain was actually built in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exposition.

Carlos Buigas produced a design so intricate for the illuminated fountain that some said it could not be built, but a huge team managed to deliver it on time for the event.

Unfortunately, it was badly damaged in the Spanish Civil War a few years later and was not repaired until 1955. A further renovation took place ahead of the 1992 Olympics, when the decision was taken to add a musical element.

There are plenty of other attractions on Montjuic, not least the spectacular view over Barcelona from the top of the hill.

You will also find a selection of galleries and museums, including one dedicated to the work of modern artist Joan Miro, some beautiful gardens and the famous Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) exhibit, as well as the stadium used for the Olympics, which is now home to Primera Liga club Espanyol.

With an away victory against Real Betis on Saturday night and a clash between Real Madrid and Sevilla on Sunday resulting in a victory for Madrid, the most important question for many Barcelona fans is whether their team has what it takes to finish the season with the 2007 La Liga title.

Barcelona’s form has been rather patchy at some points during the current season, including a period when a run of five matches saw them score one goal in each, drawing four times and winning just once; and one of the lowest points in the domestic calendar must surely have been in January when fellow Barcelona team RCD Espanyol beat Barcelona 3-1 at the Estadi Olimpic.

The team definitely lacked something when Lionel Messi was out of action through injury and perhaps Ronaldinho’s lack of form at times is due to the immense pressure there must be on all the players. And so, back to that big question; does Barcelona have what it takes to win this year’s Spanish League title?

Whatever the answer, it’s not going to be easy to do. As winners of both the Spanish League and Champions League titles in 2006 the pressure has been on the repeat their performance and after being knocked out of the UEFA competition the focus has been purely domestic. With clear focus, determination, hard work and a little luck the team does have what it takes to hold on to the title for another year, but if they make anything more than the smallest mistake then their ambitions will be thwarted.

Barcelona’s first team, often known simply as Barccedila, is world-renowned and after a few years of lacklustre results a change of club management saw an end to their problems. FC Barcelona has won the Spanish La Liga for the last two years and a strong contender for the 2006-2007 season too. In addition they won the Champions League title in May 2006 against Arsenal.

No sport lover should consider a trip to Barcelona without a trip to Camp Nou, FC Barcelona stadium. Even if no match is on when you are there the stadium museum and tour is open daily. However the stadium only truly comes alive when packed with supporters and so your best option is to ensure you stay when Barcelona play at home. Matches are usually scheduled for Sundays, but can move to Saturday at short notice to be televised, so ensure that you stay on both nights to be sure.

Catalonia also has a number of championship gold courses and many people who visit Barcelona combine it with a round or two of golf. In the Costa Brava in particular you can tee off with dramatic views of the Mediterranean, although you should be aware that green fees in Spain are expensive.
