Visit the Magic Fountain of Montjuic For a Discovery Holiday in Barcelona

You may not consider a water feature to be an alternative to a night at the theatre or a cabaret club, but a visit to Barcelona’s Magic Fountain of Montjuic may well change your mind.

The fountain does far more than simply squirt water – its water jets are accompanied by a stunning light show, which is set to music.

Head to Montjuic from your holiday apartments from Thursday to Sunday evenings during the summer and on Friday and Saturday nights in the rest of the year and you will be able to see this very special fountain in action.

The Magic Fountain of Montjuic has a huge variety of choreographed routines, with the jets and lights accompanied by music ranging from classical to 21st century pop and from Disney film scores to The Godfather.

While the idea may sound very modern, the fountain was actually built in 1929 for the Barcelona International Exposition.

Carlos Buigas produced a design so intricate for the illuminated fountain that some said it could not be built, but a huge team managed to deliver it on time for the event.

Unfortunately, it was badly damaged in the Spanish Civil War a few years later and was not repaired until 1955. A further renovation took place ahead of the 1992 Olympics, when the decision was taken to add a musical element.

There are plenty of other attractions on Montjuic, not least the spectacular view over Barcelona from the top of the hill.

You will also find a selection of galleries and museums, including one dedicated to the work of modern artist Joan Miro, some beautiful gardens and the famous Poble Espanyol (Spanish Village) exhibit, as well as the stadium used for the Olympics, which is now home to Primera Liga club Espanyol.

Of course, these are only a few of the things you will want to do if you book city apartments in Barcelona for a break.

Make sure you also make time to explore Antoni Gaudi’s stunning architecture and to sample the local cuisine in the busy bars and restaurants of Las Ramblas, while a trip to the Camp Nou and FC Barcelona’s museum is a must for any football fan.
