Magical Mourinho: Porto’s 2003-04 journey to UEFA Champions League glory

Two matchdays into the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League, FC Porto and their new dynamic coach Jose Mourinho looked in a spot of bother. After opening the campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Partizan Belgrade, they slumped to a 3-1 home defeat to Real Madrid. But their fortunes changed on matchday three when they got the best of Didier Drogba’s Marseille in a dramatic five-goal thriller. Subsequent home wins over Partizan and the French club saw them stroll into the last 16.

The Last 16 saw Porto face Manchester United as Europe’s bright new coach, Jose Mourinho, went up against ‘the boss’ Sir Alex Ferguson. After two goals from Benni McCarthy gave the Portuguese a 2-1 victory at the Dragao, Porto went to Old Trafford for a night that would provide one of the defining images of their young coach’s transformation into the Special One. A goal down, and heading out on away goals, as the game ticked into stoppage time, Costinha pounced on a mistake by United goalkeeper Tim Howard to grab a dramatic tie-winner. Mourinho set off down the touchline to join the celebrations in the corner, much to the annoyance of the home crowd.

Next up for Mou and his merry men was a quarter-final clash with now UEFA Champions League stalwarts Lyon. Goals from Deco and Ricardo Carvalho gave Porto a 2-0 home victory in the first leg. The return leg in France saw midfielder Maniche become the star of the show, as the Portugal international netted twice to secure Porto their first European Cup/Champions League semi-final in a decade.

The other quarter-finals had seen the likes of Arsenal, Milan and Real Madrid suffer surprise eliminations from the tournament, leaving Mourinho’s future club, big-spending Chelsea, as the favourites. Porto met Deportivo La Coruna in the final four, after the Spanish club had made UCL history by overturning a 4-1 first-leg defeat to Milan. After a goalless draw in Portugal, a Derlei penalty in Spain sent Super Depor packing and booked Porto’s place in the final.

A season of UCL shocks ended up pitting Porto against Monaco in the final, after Chelsea had been dumped out in the Principality. But the Ligue 1 side were simply no match for Mourinho’s side in Gelsenkirchen. Brazilian forward Carlos Alberto opened the scoring five minutes before half time, and second-half goals from Deco and Dmitri Alenichev completed a comprehensive 3-0 victory to secure an unlikely title for Mourinho, who would go on to become of one of Europe’s greatest ever coaches.

The Rise and Fall and Rise of FC Porto

If we take a look at a book of the history of football and start reading it, surely most fans would be surprised with the names of some clubs or national teams that we are going to find since their current reality may be very different from what at some point in their history, they were able to achieve.
In that regard, we can mention innumerable cases such as that of Nottingham Forest that at some point won two UEFA Champions League (called the European Cup at the time) and now is in the Championship, the Hungary national team that at one time was of the most feared teams in Europe, AC Milan (which we talked about recently) a regular national and international champion for several decades, today is just seeing the light at the end of the tunnel after several years of doubts. And so we can give many examples that would have us talking for many hours.
Thus we come to one of those examples that is curious because it leads to some points that are, to a certain extent, surprising. We refer to FC Porto and more specifically, to which it has been a decade with two very marked successes at the beginning (2003 and 2004) and end (2011) but with striking difficulties in the middle.

Two goals from Maniche were enough for Porto to book a Champions League semi-final against Deportivo.

After six minutes, Maniche latched onto Deco’s clever pass to sidefoot home before Peguy Luyindula’s close-range finish brought Lyon level on the night.

It was scant reward for a glut of Lyon chances and a minute into the second-half, Deco again found Maniche and his volley killed off Lyon’s challenge.

Giovane Elber headed a consolation at the death after Edmilson was sent off.

But Lyon’s fans could not have asked much more from their team, who provided plenty of entertainment and could have caused an upset if their finishing had been more accurate.

The lively Luyindula was at the heart of much of the French side’s good work, and he thought he had opened the scoring inside four minutes but his header was ruled out for offside.

A minute later, he raced through on goal, released by Juninho, but he lost control at the vital moment and the Porto defence recovered.

After such a vibrant opening, Lyon could consider themselves unfortunate to fall behind when Maniche guided his shot into the top-right hand corner.

Lyon were undeterred, and within eight minutes, they had reduced the deficit.

Juninho’s pass found left-back Florent Malouda, who got to the byeline and crossed for Luyindula to toe-poke home.

The chances kept coming for Lyon.

Juninho twice had Vitor Baia scrambling across his goal to save dangerous long-range efforts before Mickael Essien blazed over from close range.

Baia again rescued Porto with a full-stretch save when Elber arrowed a shot towards the top right-hand corner.

In an entertaining game, Porto got in on the action on the half-hour mark when Lyon keeper Gregory Coupet dived to palm away Deco’s free-kick.

Coupet was called into action once more when Benni McCarthy unleashed a fierce shot and the Porto striker might have done better moments later when he fired just over.

On the stroke of half-time, Porto were screaming for a penalty when Carlos Alberto bore down on goal only to trip over Coupet but referee Anders Frisk turned down the appeals.

But a minute into the second-half, Porto finally killed off the game.

Deco flicked over a cross with the outside of his boot and Maniche was again on hand with a first-time volley which flew past Coupet.

Still the chances came and went for Lyon, Elber comprehensively beating the offside trap but sending his header woefully wide.

But with the hosts needing four goals to pull off an unlikely victory, they inevitably began to run out of steam.

Their task went from improbable to nigh on impossible when Edmilson’s rash tug brought out a second yellow card 15 minutes from time.

With an eye on the semi-finals, Porto boss Jose Mourinho withdrew Deco and with his departure, Porto lost their momentum.

And though Elber’s 90th-minute bullet header was just reward for Lyon’s efforts, it was merely a consolation as Porto cruised through.
