Jose Mourinho began his ascent to the top of football management at Benfica and then União de Leiria, but it was at Porto during a two and a half season spell where he really made his name. Working with a squad of older players and astute acquisitions from other, less prestigious teams in Portugal, Mourinho forged a side that won two Portuguese league title, the UEFA Cup and, finally, achieved the remarkable feat of the Champions League title in 2004. It’s unlikely that another side from outside of Europe’s top five leagues will ever win the Champions League again. That Mourinho did it with a squad whose whole was certainly greater than the sum of its parts is testament to a manager who may have fallen behind the times now but, at his pinnacle, was one of football’s great innovators.

  1. Portugal also went in euro finals.
    Euro,uefa was top achievement.
    Why he went to chealsea?money?
    Inter was also excellent.
    Solid defensive game.
At real he was denied defensive play.
Had he been @ porto,he would win much more.
    Also portugal would win more.

  2. Meanwhile, André Vilas-Boas with 17 years old living in the same building as Sir Bobby Robson, and one day he finally got the courage to confront Sir Bobby Robson with some fan questions as Sir Bobby Robson replied with an invitation for him to go with him the next day at 8:00 am sharp. 😀

  3. "it is unlikely that a team outside of europes top 5 leagues will ever win the champions league again"
awful and just in general rather depressing quote. also i HIGHLY doubt that.

  4. As Panathinaikos fan that played against Porto multiple times during Mourinho's era, I have to state this: huge respect to this team! Made me love the game and my team even more!

  5. Still on of my fondest memories as a 7 year old was the day after going to school (i lived in the south mostly Benfica supporters) with the full Porto gear on :)) Wish i kept it, got lost along the way

  6. The portuguese league was top5 back then surpassing the french league, it only changed when qatar bought psg. But till this day the portuguese league won more ucl then the french one, four to one ucl

  7. Thats a bold think to say “ unlikely a team outside of the top5 league will ever win again”. Ajax, Porto and Benfica are historically among the best teams in europe, this type of clubs with some luck and a great year can do damaged. I would take one of this teams winning over history buyers like city and psg, trying to forge an identity based on money, schemes, and corruption. A small club will never grow if its not for the people, for the players that play for the symbol and for the passion of this beautifull game.

  8. He just won the Europa Conference League with an irrelevant Roma. I understand that the Europa Conference League is 3rd tier in European tournaments… but a title is a title.
